Leading IGA supermarkets recognised at Retailer of the Year Awards

The 2009 National IGA Retailer of the Year Awards were announced this week in front of more than 1000 retailers and suppliers as part of the annual IGA>D Expo and Conference, held on the Gold Coast.
IGA presents three ‘National Retailer of the Year’ Awards – one for each of its retail business channels: Channel One: Supa IGA/Foodland IGA, Channel Two: IGA and Channel Three: IGA X-press.

The Awards are based on a year-round process, with stores continually being visited and judged by their area’s Business Manager, who then nominates stores who perform well in their Village network for the respective State Retailer of the Year Awards. State Winners were announced earlier this year, with these retailers progressing as finalists in the national round.

The top three supermarkets rewarded as IGA’s ‘Retailers of the Year’ were: South Australia’s Norwood Foodland IGA, Queensland’s IGA New Farm and Victoria’s Blairgowrie IGA X-press. All three stores also took out another award each, with Norwood claiming the Dairy/Freezer Department of the Year price, New Farm receiving praise for their deli department and Blairgowrie taking out the IGA X-Press Fresh Department of the Year award.

Lou Jardin, CEO of IGA Distribution, said the ‘Retailer of the Year’ Award is considered a great honour amongst the IGA group, with competition becoming stronger by the year.

“Each year the process for choosing winners becomes more challenging due to the constant improvement in store standards within our brand,” he advised. “The ‘Retailer of the Year’ Award recognises the hard work, commitment and excellence in customer service these stores have demonstrated all year round.”

Two new retailers were added to the Dr Thomas S. Haggai IGA ‘Hall of Fame’. The new inductees, recognised for their significant contribution to the independent grocery industry, were John Niewand OAM of Victoria and Mick Whitehead of New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory.
