The Australian Made, Australian Grown Campaign (AMAG) believes it should be mandatory for all food products to carry a country of origin claim. In its submission to the Review of Food Labelling Law and Policy AMAG also recommended the term ‘Made in Australia’ may only be used when the food product meets the full criteria set out in the Trade Practices Act. The Australian Government is looking to reduce the consumption of high sugar drinks in remote communities. The move comes on the back of a study published by the Menzies School of Health Research on Monday (17 May), which found income management in the Northern Territory had done little to dampen soft-drink sales. Brazilian orange juice manufacturers Citrosuco and Citrovita announced earlier this week their plans to merge to form the biggest orange juice producer in the world with sales exceeding two billion reais ($A1.23 billion). Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) director Terry Davis has denied speculation that the firm is interested in buying rival beverage firm Foster’s. National Foods could be set to close down its yoghurt production facility at Wetherill Park in NSW. The Australian Hotels Association (NSW) has expressed concern over recent revelations that kids are having takeaway liquor delivered to their front doors. A Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in Miyazaki Prefecture on the southern Island of Kyushu in Japan has caused Japan to suspend exports of its famous wagyu beef. The outbreak has spread to over 100 farms, resulting in the slaughter of around 85,000 pigs and cattle, including wagyu breeding stock. The Japanese government has pledged over $1 billion in assistance to help contain the outbreak and protect the wagyu name.
