McDonalds recalls cadmium-contaminated promotional glasses

McDonalds has recalled 12 million promotional drinking glasses across the United States after the US Consumer Product Safety Commission warned consumers that the glasses contained cadmium, a toxic heavy metal, and recommended they be disposed of immediately.
The outside of the Shrek-themed glasses were painted with a design which was found to contain cadmium.
“We believe the Shrek glassware is safe for consumer use,” McDonald’s USA spokesman Bill Whitman told the BBC. “To ensure that our customers receive safe products from us, we made the decision to stop selling them and voluntarily recall these products, effective immediately.”
The glasses were part of a promotional campaign for the third film in the Shrek series, Shrek: Forever After, and were sold at McDonalds for around $2.
The CSPC advised that long-term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects, including bone softening, kidney problems and cancer.
