Matilda Bay seasonal release: Longshot coffee beer

  • July 6, 2010

Longshot coffee infused dark aleFoster’s Matilda Bay Brewery has released their seaonal limited edition beer, a coffee-inspired collaboration with gourmet coffee roaster Toby’s Estate.

The beverage, which is blended with a highly aromatic Ethiopian blend called Yirgacheffe, is described as a spiced, full-flavoured dark ale with notes of coffee and malt balancing to finish with a subtle hop bitterness.

“Our seasonal releases give us an opportunity to explore new flavours and up the ante when it comes to challenging our devout Matilda Bay drinkers. It’s also a chance to experiment and stretch the boundaries on what can make a great beer,” said Matilda Bay head brewer Scott Vincent.

“In 2006 we released Crema which used coffee beans we roasted ourselves at the Garage but this time we wanted to work with the best in the coffee roasting business – Toby’s Estate – to help us produce an ale that would really pack a punch.”

Coffee roaster Toby Smith said of the partnership with Matilda Bay, “I’d always heard coffee and beer made a great combination but I never imagined that one day I’d actually get the chance to team up with one of Australia’s best boutique breweries to create a beer using my own coffee beans. I always thought it was too much of a long shot.”

Craft brewery Matilda Bay produces a number of unique specialty beers, including Alpha Pale Ale, Fat Yak, Beez Neez and Big Helga. Matilda Bay also launches a limited-edition seasonal release each summer and winter, with previous offerings including Crema, Barking Duck and Barking Flamingo.

The limited release of 5000 cases of Longshot will be available exclusively from Dan Murphy’s at a RRP of $19.95 for a four pack, while stocks last.

Easily the most horrible beer I have ever tasted. Purchased from Dan Murphy’s, a friend and I are going to try every beer they offer. This is absolutely disgusting. Smells like vegemite (which I really enjoy), but beer shouldn’t taste like this. I can’t believe the manufactures thought it was a good idea to sell this rubbish.
