Aldi plans assault after local profits jump

Aldi is planning a fresh assault on the Australian market after seeing its local profits in jump by more than a quarter in 2009.The discount retail giant confirmed yesterday (9 September) that it plans to spend A$1bn (US$925.8m) to further expand in Australia.

The retailer is already expanding its distribution and warehousing in New South Wales and Victoria and plans to spend the A$1bn between now and 2013 to further boost the network and open more stores.

Aldi booked net profit of A$91.9m for 2009, up from $72.6m in 2008. The company did not disclose its sales.
