New industry body for cafés teams with GWF and Fonterra
- May 18, 2011
A newly-formed industry body for the café and sandwich shop industry, the Australasian Sandwich Association, has kicked off in style with two major industry partners, GWF Foodservice (a subsidiary of George Weston Foods) and New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra.
GWF Foodservice and Fonterra will assist the industry body’s efforts in liaising with government and
regulatory bodies over issues affecting the café and sandwich sector. In addition, the industry alliance will formulate a calendar of specific activities aimed at raising the profile of Australia’s lunchtime heroes, including the Great Australian Sandwichship competition, which seeks to showcase Australia’s best sandwich creators.
Tony Green, Marketing Director at GWF Foodservice, said, “As a key supplier to the Australian sandwich industry, George Weston Foods has long recognised the invaluable place that cafés and sandwich businesses play in the local foodservice landscape. For the ongoing health of the local sandwich industry it is vital that the industry is given a relevant voice. We are proud to support the ASA’s commitment to speak up for the sector, and look forward to working alongside the team to promote and celebrate a unique and evolving industry.”
Nick Dymond, Product Manager for Fonterra Foodservice said, “The sandwich industry provides healthy, quick and delicious meal solutions to families and workers across Australia. We welcome the establishment of a cohesive industry body representing the sector across Australia and look forward to working with the ASA to highlight healthy dairy options in the country.”
“The ASA is delighted to welcome both George Weston Foods and Fonterra to the Association. We look forward to working alongside these two highly important market players in raising the profile of the café and sandwich industry across the country,” said Graeme McCormack, Executive Director of the Australasian Sandwich Association.
In addition to sponsoring the ASA as an industry organisation, GWF Foodservice and Fonterra are also backing the group’s major event, the Great Australian Sandwichship competition, which seeks to showcase Australia’s best sandwich creators.
The Great Australian Sandwichship Southern Final will be held from June 19 – 21 at the FSA Expo in Melbourne. The winner of the Great Australian Sandwichship Southern Final will be in the running to compete at the World Sandwichship Final in Sydney in October, where they will compete against the best sandwich makers from around the world.
