Australia’s macadamia industry access to Indian market

The Federal Government has announced successful trade negotiations with India will enhance the export of macadamia nuts to the sub-continent.

Concluded negotiations with India’s quarantine authorities will allow Australian macadamia nuts to be exported to India without fumigation previously required. Ongoing consultation with the Australian macadamia industry will allow heat treatment as an alternative to fumigation.

Australian Macadamia Society CEO, Jolyon Burnett, said market access negotiations often take years and can be the limiting factor but this outcome has been achieved more quickly than anyone expected. He said, “This result is great news for the Australian macadamia industry as increased access to the Indian market will help our macadamia industry to continue to grow.”

Australian Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig said, “Short term estimates of the value of the Indian market to Australian producers are up to 300 tonnes or about A$3 Million each year.”
