A food innovation workshop in Werribee, Victoria yesterday attracted more than 120 participants from government, the food industry and research organizations to share ways to make Australian food healthier.

The workshop highlighted the work of the ‘Australian Government Food and Health Dialogue’ (the Dialogue) established in March 2009 following a 2007 children’s nutrition and physical activity survey which found that many Australian children were consuming a diet high in salt and saturated fat and low in essential vitamins and minerals.

Chaired by Catherine King, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing, the Dialogue negotiates agreed reformulation targets with industry representatives.

Ms King said “These workshops will share national and international information and experience in reformulation, including approaches to improving the nutritional profile of products, technical challenges and product case studies.”

Ms King also noted the increasing consumer demand for healthier products and praised those members of industry taking steps to meet this demand.

A further two workshops are being held in Sydney and Brisbane on 25 and 27 October respectively.
