Woolworths responds to Coles’ court threat over price-cutting image

Australian supermarket chain, Woolworths, has been forced to pull back a major summer advertising campaign after being threatened with court action by rival supermarket chain Coles.
At the centre of Woolworths campaign was an image of a pair of scissors cutting through a dollar symbol. Coles saw the symbol to be too similar to an image it has been using in its own summer advertising campaign.
A spokesperson for Woolworths told Australian Food News today, “We confirm that Coles’ lawyers have alerted us to their concerns about our use of a ‘scissors cuts dollar’ symbol in our summer campaign of price reductions on 1,500 everyday items until early January. On a without admissions basis, Woolworths has undertaken not to use the symbol.”
Getting a last word in, an email to Australian Food News from the Woolworths spokesperson quipped, “We believe that Coles’ heavy-handed response to our campaign is tacit acknowledgment that our price reductions are a winner with customers.”
