The Australasian Sandwich Association, a new industry association comprising of George Weston Foods Limited subsidiary Tip Top Foodservice, dairy giant Fonterra, sandwich filler-maker Prontier, NSW-based Sandhurst Fine Foods, and others, will launch a range of sandwich industry focused activities for2012 in an effort to keep sandwiches at the top of the Australian lunchtime diet.

Based on new research, the Association has claimed that sandwiches are the number one lunchtime option for Australians, with an estimated 26 sandwiches being purchased every second. Further research by the NPD Group’s CREST service has found that over 816 million sandwiches were purchased in Australia for the nine months ended 30 September, 2011.

The CREST service also found that in comparison with the 816 million sandwich purchases there were 481 million burgers purchased in the same period. Sandwiches in Australia were found to be four times more popular than dish salads, and sixteen times more popular than sushi and sashimi.

The proposed activities of the Association include A Kid’s Sandwich Masterclass at the Crave International Food Festival, a National Sandwich Week in October 2012, and the “Great Australian Sandwichship” program.
