Government “Energy Efficiency” Grants opened to small businesses

The Federal government’s Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency is making available grants under a program aimed at small and medium enterprises.

Funding applications for grants of between $100,000 to $1 million (excluding GST) are now open until March 16, 2012. Successful applicants will be announced in April of this year and will need to complete proposed projects by June 2015.

The Energy Efficiency Information Grants Program (EEIG) is aimed at small and medium enterprises (SME’s) and community organizations with up to 200 employees and the Department hopes to support these organizations in making “more energy efficient decisions”. In particular, the Department details that the program will raise awareness and allow businesses to evaluate their energy efficiency information as well provide assistance in research & development.

The Department estimates that the initiative will provide AU $40 million in support to national SME’s through the provision of information and support to make “smarter energy choices”.

Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) Chief Executive Kate Carnell believes the project will give her organisation, which is working with the Department, a chance to expand its membership base by assisting struggling SME’s.
