US organic sales rise in face of downturn

Nestle on Friday (19 February) became the latest of the largest food manufacturers to set out its stall for further expansion in the world’s emerging markets. China to become largest grocery market by 2014

China is set to overtake the US as the world’s largest grocery market for the first time by 2014, new research has suggested. According to market research firm IGD, the Chinese grocery market will grow to a value of EUR761bn (AUD$1,202bn), outstripping the US that is set to be worth EUR745bn in four years’ time. The latest ABS retail trade figures show that sales in December fell 0.7%, seasonally adjusted, although restaurant and takeaway outlets were big winners. Australia’s largest supermarket operator, Woolworths, has today announced half year sales of $27.2 billion – a 4.2% increase on last year, or 6% when stripping out petrol sales.
