Australian scientists identify genetic markers for improving lamb meat quality

Australian scientists say they have identified new genetic markers that will allow Australian producers to increase the lean meat yield and productivity of their sheep. The lockout of workers at the Swift meatworks in Brooklyn, Victoria, has entered its second month, after NUW members again voted to reject the company’s 2% annual pay offer. New Zealand meat processor Silver Fern Farms is to increase capacity at three plants after a fire wrecked a facility in Te Aroha on Friday. Silver Fern Farms sees FY profits slide

New Zealand meat processor Silver Fern Farms revealed last week that it had swung to a loss in its most recent financial year after restructuring costs hit its bottom line. For the 12 months to the end of September, the firm made a net operating loss of NZ$800,000, compared to a profit of NZ$5.4m last year. One-off restructuring costs of NZ$7.2m contributed to the loss. New Zealand meat processor Silver Fern Farms has announced plans to close its Brooks operation in the UK city of Norwich. The company notified its Brooks employees of the closure on Friday.
