Chickens seized by Victorian government on welfare grounds

The Victorian Department of Primary Industries (DPI) this week announced its seizure of over 700,000 chickens to safeguard their welfare at six broiler farms located in Northern Victoria, South West Victoria and West Gippsland. Japan suspends imports of Australian poultry products

Victorian avian flu duck cull

A national disease emergency plan has been activated by the culling of stock at Golden Duck Farms in Victoria to prevent the outbreak of a pathogenic avian influenza. According to reports, to prevent any potential risks of outbreaks, 25,000 ducks were gassed to death in the last two days. One of Australia’s largest poultry producers, Turi Foods, has been ordered by the Federal Court of Australia, to pay AU$100,000 penalty after admitting to a misleading claim. New standards for reducing the prevalence of salmonella and campylobacter in young chickens and turkeys are being implemented in the United States. UK organic sales drop in economic gloom
