Aus Food News X Iconic wine brand, Orlando, relaunches by reimagining Australia’s most legendary dishes

Orlando are bringing back memories and creating new ones with the relaunch of this classic Australian wine brand. To mark the occasion, Orlando has teamed up with internationally renowned Australian chef, Guy Turland to honour the quintessential Australian home dinner party – Orlando presents Australiana Nostalgia.
Leading Australia’s winemaking excellence in the 1950s and 60s, Orlando was a household name and known as one of the finest producers of quality wine in Australia. The relaunch has seen Orlando release The Legends range, five iconic wines that capture all that is great about Australian classics, as well as introduce four next-generation New Heroes, the exciting new guard in fine wine.
Working closely with Orlando’s winemaker Ben Thoman, Turland has reimagined classic Australian dishes to pair with these award-winning wines, adding a fine-dining touch to the uniquely Australian table setting. Available to replicate at home by visiting orlandowines.com/australiana-nostalgia, Australiana Nostalgia taps into the fondness of an inherited and well-thumbed cookbook and reinvigorates it with a contemporary flair for your next home dinner party.
Providing the blueprint for Guy Turland’s memory-filled home entertaining recipes, Orlando produces exemplary regional wines that connect to place and tell a story in Australian winemaking history. Tied to the Adelaide Hills, Orlando Hilary Adelaide Hills Chardonnay’s zippy palate and bright citrus flavours elevate Turland’s reimagined wild mushroom vol-au-vent. The staple hors d’oeuvre and platter ruler of yesteryear is made with a flaky pastry and a Parmigiano Reggiano and black truffle infusion, all topped with toasted walnuts.
Next, a whole-roasted and stuffed apricot chicken served with an apricot nectar sauce pairs perfectly with the lively red fruit and ripe cherry complexity of the Orlando Cellar 13 Barossa Valley Grenache. The poultry staple was a must in 1970s home entertaining, and this wine and food pairing is an interesting twist on a classic.
To finish, the full-bodied distinctive dark liquorice notes of the Orlando Lawson’s Padthaway Shiraz, highlighted by subtle eucalypt, matches up with Turland’s remastered after dinner mint slice, a sumptuous mint filling encased within a dark chocolate layer to end the party perfectly.
Orlando’s winemaker Ben Thoman says of the collaboration: “I fondly remember my Mum preparing dishes like these in my childhood, and then staying up ‘late’ to snaffle an after dinner mint. So, it has been great fun to relive those memories with Guy developing this nostalgic menu and matching it to my wines.”
Guy Turland says: “As a proud Aussie, food & wine lover and Chef, I’m honoured to be working with such a legendary Australian wine in Orlando.
The journey of creating a nostalgic Australian dinner party with Ben Thoman and the Orlando team was a trip down memory lane. Going back in time to the 70s, 80s, and 90s and drawing inspiration from so many past chefs and winemakers was a reminder that our future is paved by our past, and that old legends will always have a place in today.
Classic combinations of hot puff pastry vol-au-vent filled with wild mushrooms, sweet and creamy glazed apricot chicken, and after dinner mint slices have stood the test of time, and like the Orlando wine range, they’re ready to be heroes once again!”
Raised through the inquisitive nature and determination of one of the founding families of South Australian winemaking, Orlando was one of the most prominent producers of quality wine in Australia. Orlando challenged the status quo through technological innovation at a time when fortified wines dominated the industry, crafting legends in the process. Now under the skilled hand of winemaker Ben Thoman, the return of Orlando features regionally focused wines of great distinction, and are available for purchase exclusively at Dan Murphy’s, Merivale at Home, select on-premise venues and online at orlandowines.com.
Fall in love as an Australian wine legacy is reborn today, offering some of the country’s most iconic fine wines, and pairing them with cherished Australian dishes for home entertaining via Orlando presents Australiana Nostalgia.
