Cathy Freeman launches national Sports for Schools program

From today, all primary and secondary schools across Australia can register for the Coles Sports for Schools program to get new sporting equipment for their school.

Launched at Carlton Gardens Primary School by Coles Managing Director, Ian McLeod, and seven-time Gold Medal winner, Cathy Freeman, Coles Sports for Schools offers schools the chance to get brand new sporting equipment simply through families, friends and the local school community doing their normal weekly shop at Coles.

“The fact that 30% of Aussie kids do not participate in sport or any physical activities is alarming. We believe the more sporting equipment and activity sets kids have access to, the more likely they are to be active,” said Ian.  “And that’s why we’re inviting all 10,050 schools from around Australia to participate.”

Fronting the Coles Sports for Schools campaign is Australia’s golden girl, Cathy Freeman. As the national ambassador, Cathy supports all efforts to encourage kids to be active.

“Sport has obviously played a huge role in my life. Until I was 8 it was all about netball, and then a teacher encouraged me to try running which I did, and I loved it, and as they say the rest is history!” said Cathy.

“I hope all schools sign up – big and small – and that the local communities team-up to get everyone collecting vouchers.”

Schools can register online at Vouchers will be available to customers at Coles Supermarkets, Coles Online, Bi-Lo and Pick’n Pay stores from 2 September until 31 October 2010. Every $10 spent at Coles Supermarkets, Coles Online, Bi-Lo and Pick’n Pay stores will earn one voucher.
