Australia’s oldest brewery has switched over to natural gas, thanks to the extension of the natural gas network in Hobart. The Cascade Brewery has installed three boilers to run on natural gas from Bass Strait. Boilers, along with refrigeration, are the significant energy users in a brewery. Nestlé is to spend CHF 50 million (US$50.5 million) on setting up an R&D centre in India to develop its “popularly positioned products” that are sold to poorer consumers. US food giant General Mills booked a 12% rise in first-quarter profits as US sales were boosted by growth in the company’s cereal and yoghurt divisions. The Cheerios and Yoplait maker posted net profit of US$472.1 million – an increase of 12.2% – for the three months to 29 August. Net sales were up 1.5% at $3.53 billion. SABMiller on Monday announced the introduction of a new beer to the portfolio of Miller Brands, its UK operation. The beer, Kozel, is a 4% ABV Czech lager which is brewed in the village of Velke Popovice, near Prague.Kozel will be launched in draught format with a managed pub operator in 100 selected sites starting from the end of September.
