Last week at the 2010 Royal Melbourne Wine Show Awards, WA wine producer Harvey River Bridge Estate was awarded the Jimmy Watson memorial Trophy for the 2009 Joseph River Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine blended from the Margaret River and the Geographe region.Margaret River is traditionally known as a premium producer of cabernet sauvignon, but lesser known regions such as Geographe are now also becoming acknowledged for their production of premium wines. This is the second major award won in the last 12 months by a Geographe producer, with Barrecas Winery 2008 Shiraz winning the Best Western Australian Wine in the 2009 WA Wine Industry Awards in November last year.

Harvey River Bridge Estate is located in the Geographe region which is situated in the southwest corner of Western Australia, less than two hours from Perth. The region includes the towns of Harvey in the north and Busselton in the south, as well as Capel and the Ferguson Valley, and is renowned for boutique wine producers and stunning scenery and beaches.

The climate in Geographe comprises warm and sunny days during the ripening season, with cooling evening winds from Geographe Bay, allowing the fruit to develop full fruit flavours with balanced acidity. The Harvey River Bridge winery was established in 1999 with a first release in the 2000 vintage. The 2009 vintage is the first time any Margaret River fruit has been used in the flagship Joseph River range.

The Jimmy Watson award is named after the legendary Jimmy Watson who championed wine consumption in the middle of the last century, and the trophy has been presented every year since 1962 at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show for best red wine from a recent vintage. This award is the most sought-after award in the Australian wine industry.

Other WA wineries to have success at the 2010 Royal Melbourne Wine Show include: 2010 Vasse Felix Sauvignon Blanc for Best Sauvignon Blanc or Semillon Sauvignon Blanc Blend and the 2007 Houghton Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon for Best Claret Style or Cabernet Sauvignon.
