Potato man starts new marketing trend?
An American man has just eaten his 1200th potato as part of a bizarre 60 day challenge to promote potatoes.Chris Voigt, executive director of the Washington Potato Commission ate nothing but 20 potatoes a day for 60 days to remind the public about the nutritional value of potatoes, and prove it was possible to live healthily off potatoes alone for an extended period of time.
Potatoes have lost favour with consumers in recent years due to the popularity of low carb diets; it will be interesting to see whether or not Mr Voigt’s potato challenge will encourage increased potato sales.
During his challenge, Mr Voigt said he lost 9.5 kilograms, his cholesterol level went from 214 to 147, and his glucose dropped from 104 to 94.
With marketers always keen for new ways to promote their products and draw attention to the nutritional qualities of certain food, perhaps we will see Banana Man, Brussel Sprout man or Strawberry Girl some time soon!
