Tesco to launch healthy eating range for children

UK supermarket chain Tesco is launching a healthy-eating range for children in the UK called Tesco Goodness, which is already on sale at its stores in the US.The range is a selection of healthy snacks, convenient chilled prepared meals and lunchbox fillers developed to meet children’s nutritional needs, the UK retailer said. It is also the first own-label range to be introduced to the UK market from Tesco’s international business.

Goodness is already available in Tesco’s Fresh & Easy stores in the US, where it launched last year, and has been adapted to suit the UK market.

Launching this month, there will be over 70 products in the Goodness range. Every Tesco Goodness product will meet criteria for levels of fat, saturates, sugar and salt. There are no artificial colours or flavours and many have added vitamins and calcium. The majority of chilled prepared meals also contain at least one portion of vegetables which count towards a child’s five-a-day. Every single product also has to meet the approval of the children’s tasting panel before it makes the final range.

Tesco food marketing director Sarah Bradbury said: “Fresh & Easy customers really like the Goodness range, so we were keen to share it with our British shoppers. The products are ideal for those busy days when parents want convenient, yet healthy, prepared meals and snacks their children will enjoy.”

Products start from just GBP0.45 (US$0.72) for Goodness fruit pots, GBP2.00 for prepared chilled meals such as Pasta Bolognese or Sausage and Mash, and GBP1.00 for a four pack of Goodness yoghurts.
