Australia’s Woolworths strikes major European private label partnership
EMD Managing Director, Philippe Gruyters
Leading Australian supermarket group Woolworths has entered into a private label supply partnership with Switzerland-based European Marketing Distribution (EMD).
EMD is an alliance between 14 members in the European grocery retail sector located across 22 countries. Woolworths will use this alliance channel to procure some of its private label products.
Steve Greentree, Director of the private label Woolworths Food Company division, said the partnership will increase Woolworths’ access to private label products it cannot source locally.
“Combined with our commitment to source Australian products first and foremost, this ensures our customers will have even more choice and convenience when shopping for our own brand products at Woolworths,” Greentree said.
Partnership to give Aussie suppliers access to Europe
Woolworths said the partnership will also provide a network for its Australian and New Zealand suppliers interested in exporting to Europe.
Other major supermarket groups that are also EMD members include Russia’s Globus, the UK’s Asda, Sweden’s Asfood and German discount ‘hypermarket’ Kaufland, which is currently considering an entry into Australia.
Managing Director of EMD, Philippe Gruyters, said “Our commitment in the Oceanian countries of Australia and New Zealand reinforces the importance of EMD and sets a new standard regarding the dynamic commercialisation of all products in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods ranges,” he said.
